Arsenal have kicked off their start to the season with back-to-back 3-0 wins in the Community Shield and their first Premier League match against Coventry City. And most pundits who have Arsenal set to retain their title are looking somewhat justified at this very early stage.

But how hard is it to win back-to-back Premier Leagues? Excluding the 1st Division, as it was known before the Premier League, there have been 34 seasons so far. Only three teams (Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City) have achieved the feat of back-to-backs, and that does not include 3 in a row and Man City's unique quadruple. Back-to-back titles may be harder than it seems. Although remarkably Man Utd have achieved it 4 times!

Last season Liverpool were odds on for most pundits to retain their title from the previous year (2024-25), especially as they had supposedly strengthened their squad with Isak, Wirtz and Ekitike. But after a quick-fire start of five wins in a row, that effort fell apart in somewhat dramatic fashion, as they lost the next four. Liverpool's season finished in some disarray with Manager Arne Slot sacked, again proving winning two titles on the trot is difficult.

Will Arsenal win back-to-back Premier Leagues? The odds are, again, that they won't, and as the season goes, will the pressure to win a second title in a row be actually greater than winning their first one since 2003-04? This may well be an exacting test of Manager Mikel Arteta’s capabilities more so than the players. The quality of the squad is not in question.
